I picked 6775 because there was a lot of on line photos
including the first below on rrpicturees.net taken by a friend in Deepwater
NJ 15 minutes from me. It was a very well traveled loco. These
are photos I bought from eBay. |

This is an American Models SD60 released in 2001. I have other
American Models SD60 but none were made as Wide Cab SD60M for Norfolk Southern.
They run really well and can pull a lot of cars. This came up for sale on eBay
in March 2025 for a good price because of the awful paint. That is fine with
me. I don’t model Frisco. It will get stripped. I have been told Frisco did not
even have SD60.
Unfortunately the SD60 has been out of stock at American Models
for a while. It is the most readily available “modern” loco in S Scale besides
the American Flyer SD70ace and ES44. They are both permanently out of
production since Lionel ended all American Flyer sales.
These photos were taken on 3-13-25 as received still with the Hi Rail wheels and couplers. I bought new scale wheels from American Models and installed my SD60 draft gear. That is a first for this SD60. I 3D printed these draft gear myself. They were previously bought from the now closed Shapeways
On 5-12-25 I finally dunked this to strip the paint. Scalecoat is back in business selling the plastic paint stripper and paint thinner – only. This loco was painted silver, then white and red. Stripping a plastic loco is an all day project of soaking and scrubbing until clean.

This has popped to the top of the to do
list after almost a year off. I did some work to it before fading off into other
projects as I so often do. I added my 3D printed draft gear that is also on my
other SD60.
I had some bigger plans for this loco but
my completion times are growing. I just don’t have the energy like I used to
and get work done after work so most progress is on the weekends only. Get it
done – good enough. This will have my first ever use of the open 3D printed fan
grills I made. It will get grab irons and some other details not on it as built
from American Models.
Handrail
Stanchions
By far my biggest issue with this loco is really wrong handrail
stanchions. They look nothing like what EMD made. The real SD60 was alive and
well when American Models made this loco so there is no explanation why they are
so wrong. I got the real EMD handrail stanchion drawing and tried designing them
myself. I got “close” but I was not convinced my parts would not be fragile
and/or possibly warp. Brass was the best answer. I have wanted brass handrail
stanchions for the SD60 for a while. But again after almost a year of this loco
I am no closer to getting brass stanchions made. I have the original and some
new American Models stanchions I am going to use. This
will match the rest of my SD60 however wrong they are with the original American
Models stanchions.
