This is Overland OMI1784 that is 1 of 15 models made in May
1983 with dynamic brakes and anticlimber. In April 2022 a
collection of Overland locos appeared on eBay with the same horrid hand
painted fictional paint scheme. I wound up with 3 of about 6 locos sold at
that time. It is the same OMI1784 as my Conrail 8238 which was also 1 of the 3
locos bought. Whatever work I have featured on my 8238 page is going to
happen to this loco too. Ironically there is a LOT of internet photo of this loco which
is really a nothing special GP38-2. It got around to run
in various places from Ohio to Michigan and Virginia. Also Athearn made 5334
in HO. |

For as bad as these locos looked I thought they could minimally
be parts locos. I get the “your trains so do what you want with them” but brass
models are usually held in a higher regard, and finished with a higher skill level.
Not quite so here. But with about 60 hours of work they can be brought back
from the dead. This brushed on Sears Weatherbeater
paint was so thick some of the grab irons were filled in. It took some significant
effort between dunking and blasting to get the paint removed.
